Shell Desa Bersemi
Desa BERSEMI (Bersih/Clean, Sehat/Healthy, and Mandiri/Independent) is a community-based integrated waste management initiative initiated by Shell Indonesia in two villages bordering the Shell Lubricant Oil Blending Plant (Shell LOBP), namely Pantai Makmur and Segara Makmur.
The BERSEMI Village program focuses on developing clean and healthy living behaviors with the #thinkcircular principle—reducing, reusing, and recycling waste to minimize environmental impact. This program has successfully empowered the communities in Pantai Makmur and Segara Makmur to skillfully process both organic and inorganic waste into economically valuable products.
Running since 2016, the BERSEMI Village program has benefited approximately 200 families and trained 70 facilitators who are ready to expand similar programs to other surrounding villages.
The activities within the BERSEMI Village program include:
- Compost House: Processing organic waste into various types of fertilizers such as compost, local microorganism fertilizers, and liquid organic fertilizers.
- Sustainable Food Garden Area: Supporting residents in optimizing land and open spaces to grow vegetables and fruits.
- Creative Industry: Utilizing plastic waste to create useful handicrafts.
- Waste Bank: Managing plastic waste to make it more useful, either by selling it or transforming it into crafts.
